Lover Theory

Prideshipping / Seto Kaiba × Atem

Atem wants a definition. Seto insists on proof instead. A quiet, banter-filled conversation about what makes two people "lovers" spirals into philosophy, quantum metaphors, and — eventually — two rings. Domestic fluff with a healthy dose of logic used entirely in the service of romance.

Quite some months had passed since the king's return.

The nights were quiet, the wind pleasant. Both the afterlife and the living world seemed to have settled back into calm, but between the two of them, there was always some fire, somewhere.

A gentle fire, one that made no logical sense.

That night, Atem sat on the palace terrace, deep in unusual thought.

Tracing the rim of his cup with a finger, he murmured, almost to himself.

"Kaiba. Are we lovers?"

At that single line, the silence gave a faint creak.

Seto looked up from his documents, his brow moving slightly.

"Where did that come from."

"No — the priests were saying it, the other day. 'The king's lover is always so composed.'"

"...Those priests. Saying more than they need to."

Seto tilted his glass, looking away.

Atem laughed a little.

"So, which is it? Are we lovers?"

"Depends on the definition."

"Definition?"

"A lover is someone who shares time with you, exchanges feelings with you, and desires you in return. In theory."

"Hm. Then we're already there."

An instant answer.

Seto cleared his throat softly.

"But I have no memory of us exchanging the actual word 'lovers.'"

"Does a relationship not exist without the word for it?"

"Logically, anything unproven remains undetermined."

"By that logic, our relationship's a quantum state."

"...Whose influence is that metaphor."

Atem shrugged and laughed.

"Who else's would it be."

That laugh, to Seto, felt a little unfair.

Every bit of logic, every theory, melted the instant it met that smile.

"...But whether there's a word for it or not, I'm here, in fact."

"So not merely a theoretical existence, then."

"Obviously. I don't vanish when you touch me."

Atem reached out and lightly took hold of Seto's fingertips.

The warmth of skin carried through.

Then, with a faint smile, he went on.

"Proof, complete."

Seto let out a breath, exasperated, but somehow pleased underneath it.

"...Don't go completing definitions on your own."

"Definitions aren't made. They're noticed."

"That's sophistry."

"Your influence, isn't it?"

He laughed again.

That laughter dissolved into the night wind, dropping a quiet warmth over the mansion.

"A lover isn't, in theory, something you talk about like this."

"Then what is it, in practice?"

"Something you understand without needing to talk about it."

"So that means we're already there, don't we."

Seto's words caught in his throat.

Seeing that, Atem took a satisfied sip of his tea.

The night deepened.

In a silence more certain than words, their fingers stayed linked, and the theory slowly came undone.

A faint breeze stirred the air.

The lights had already been dimmed, moonlight softly outlining the two of them.

Only the sound of their breathing overlapped, slow, exchanging warmth in the silence.

Atem shifted slightly, within his arms.

"...Hey, Kaiba."

"What."

"Is a lover someone who fulfills each other's desires?"

Seto's brow moved, just slightly.

"That again? Philosophy this time?"

"Your influence."

"...Blaming me again."

Atem laughed softly.

He turned over and rested his cheek against Seto's chest.

"I thought about it earlier. A lover is someone you share time with, exchange feelings with, and desire in return. You said that yourself."

"Yeah."

"Then we already fulfill all of it. But we've never actually used the word 'lovers.'"

"Fixated on the word, are you."

"Not that. ...Words give shape to feelings."

Seto fell silent for a moment.

Toying with a strand of Atem's hair, he answered, low.

"Shape can stay ambiguous."

"But if it stays ambiguous, it doesn't reach anyone else."

"Does it need to reach anyone else?"

There was a short pause.

Atem's voice rang quiet in the moonlight.

"Maybe. This relationship is only yours and mine. But among the ones who call my name, there are some who'd like to call it 'lovers.' That's not wrong, is it?"

Seto let out a short breath.

"...Not wrong."

Atem lifted his face.

"Then we're lovers."

"In theory, yes."

"In theory?"

"No — as an observed result, yes."

Atem's mouth curved slightly into a smile.

"You can't let go of theory, can you."

"There's no truth except at the end of accumulated theory."

"Then show me that truth."

Seto said nothing, only took Atem's hand and laced their fingers together.

Silently, slowly, he pulled him closer.

"This is proof."

Something deep in Atem's chest quietly gathered heat.

He murmured, voice dropped low.

"...You still say sweet things through logic."

"I only stated a fact."

Atem laughed at that, and, face still buried against his neck, whispered.

"Fine, I'll draw my own conclusion. Love is 'holding someone like you dear, without needing logic at all.'"

Seto's throat moved faintly.

That silence was itself an admission.

A few seconds later, Seto let out a small breath.

"...'Without logic' doesn't sound like you."

"I've learned. To draw conclusions from results, not reasoning."

"Are you calling that my influence too?"

"Of course."

They laughed together.

It was a laugh quieter than the night wind.

Eventually, Seto lowered his gaze.

"...If you want a definition for 'lovers,' I don't mind giving you one."

"You don't mind?"

"If it puts you at ease, then that's what we'll call it."

"At ease, huh."

Atem nodded faintly and placed a hand on Seto's chest.

"Love is being at ease. Devotion is trust. ...And you have both."

Seto said nothing.

He only drew Atem in close, quietly.

"...Then there's no need for a definition anymore, is there."

At those words, Atem smiled faintly.

"True. As long as we're lovers, we don't need the word for it."

Moonlight lit their joined hands.

The outline of their laced fingers was, by now, so natural neither could tell whose was whose — and that, itself, was the shape of a love beyond theory.

"...So, what you were after was a definition for the word 'lovers,' then."

Resting an elbow against the wrinkled sheets, Seto let the corner of his mouth lift slightly.

Atem lay on his back, staring at the pattern on the ceiling. In the night air, Atem's fingertips traced through Seto's hair.

"Yeah. I thought if I knew the definition, I could get the relationship sorted out."

"Sorted out?"

"But something's off. The more I define it, the more it falls apart."

Atem shook his head.

"'Like' or 'love' — those aren't states, more like a kind of motion. The instant it stops, it becomes something else."

Seto laughed, low.

"Motion. You're being too philosophical."

"You're being too practical."

"Naturally. I'm the one touching you in reality."

With that, Seto took Atem's hand.

"Logic doesn't matter. It's the accumulation of actions that defines a relationship. A kiss, an embrace, thinking of you in the middle of an ordinary day — all of it is part of the proof."

"...Then what's the conclusion of that proof?"

At Atem's question, Seto picked up a small box from beside the pillow.

"This."

Inside the black box, when opened, were two gold rings that seemed to drink in the light.

The metal's gleam reflected in Atem's eyes.

"The definition's been fulfilled. So I'll leave you the proof."

Seto slid the ring onto Atem's finger.

"Whatever the word 'lovers' means or doesn't mean — 'you're here, beside me.' That's enough."

Atem narrowed his eyes.

"Jumping straight to a wedding ring. That's quite the leap in logic."

"No leap at all. The necessary conditions are satisfied. I chose you, and you chose me. There's only one possible conclusion."

"...Kaiba, are you determined to turn this into math no matter what?"

"Because you brought up philosophy. I'm balancing it out."

Their laughter crossed, overlapping.

Outside, the night quietly deepened.

Atem gazed at the ring and murmured, almost to himself.

"I didn't need a definition. But I wanted proof. ...Maybe, this whole time."

Seto leaned his forehead in, as if catching those words.

"Then that's enough now. Proof complete."

His lips touched Atem's.

No words were needed — but an answer that undeniably existed. Between the two of them, that was all that remained.

Morning light spilled through the gap in the curtains, drawing soft lines across the floor.

Atem sat cross-legged on the bed, spinning the ring gleaming on his finger.

"Shouldn't something like this be handed over with more fanfare?"

Atem laughed a little, peering at Seto through the ring.

Seto poured coffee into a glass, shrugging.

"Dramatic staging isn't my style. ...Want some?"

"I'll have the coffee. But — don't lie to me. Everyone in the world knows who you are, don't they?"

"...I'm a figurehead."

"...Fine, I'll let you have that one."

"Actually — even in mathematical proofs, the beauty of a derivation lies in its quietness."

"...I see."

Atem nodded and held the ring up to the light.

"A quiet proof, huh. That's more convincing than flashy words, honestly."

Seto sat down beside him.

"In the end, what you wanted wasn't a 'definition' — it was 'certainty,' wasn't it."

Atem thought for a moment, then smiled faintly, still looking at the ring.

"Probably. Giving shape to what I feel puts me at ease. ...'A proven feeling' is a strange way to put it, though."

Seto set a hand on Atem's shoulder, his tone gentle.

"Strange is fine by me. Our whole relationship doesn't fit within any conventional domain of definition."

"I like that phrasing."

Atem let out a small laugh.

"Alright, let's call ourselves 'lovers in an undefined domain.'"

Seto's eyes narrowed at the joke.

"Has a nice ring to it. Though whether 'undefined' or 'indeterminate' — to me, it's a settled matter."

Atem furrowed his brow, a little embarrassed.

"Say it like that, and it starts sounding like a line from a paper again."

"A demonstrated expression of affection."

Seto said it plainly, and dropped a light kiss on Atem's fingertip.

A small laugh spilled from Atem's lips.

It was satisfied, and, somehow, innocent as a child's.

"...I see. So this is what it means to 'not hesitate at love.'"

"Only just now understanding that?"

"No — it finally clicked. I'd been overthinking it. 'Love' and 'devotion' were already happening, before any thought at all."

Seto sipped his coffee and said, quietly.

"So the definition's done, and the proof's done. All that's left is to keep updating it."

Atem narrowed his eyes and spun the ring once more in the morning light.

"An eternally updating love, huh... not bad."

The corner of Seto's mouth lifted.

"Set the updates to automatic."

"Understood... no, I get it."

Their laughter overlapped, together, in the light.

The definition of love was no longer necessary.

For the two of them, it had simply become something that "kept going."
